Jimmy "Jim" Wilson Wright, age 84, of Long Beach, California, passed away on April 17, 2024. He was born on May 26, 1939, in Tabor City, North Carolina.
Jim had a rich and fulfilling life. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960, where he worked aboard the USS John Willis as an assault boat coxswain in the Eastern Mediterranean and played a significant role in approving the first Variable Depth Sonar. Jim moved to California in September 1960 at the conclusion of his service.
His career was diverse and rewarding. Starting with early jobs as a driver's license examiner and a heavy equipment operator, Jim later pursued a 30-year professional career in California as a square dance caller and teacher. He shared his passion for dance at various clubs, including Rainbow Squares, Bachelor and Belles, and Ladies and Gentlemen, across Los Angeles and Orange counties.
In his free time, Jim enjoyed being a Spanish language student, and taught himself to fix computers and golf clubs showcasing his dedication to lifelong learning. He enjoyed golfing and watching car racing and football on TV.
Jim is survived by his half-sister, Rhonda and his long-time partner of 41 years, Suzanne Schweiger. Jim said that the best thing that ever happened to him was when he started sharing life with Sue.
Jim is also survived by his three daughters, Debbie, Sandy, and Wendy, and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents Wilson and Edna May Wright, as well as his sisters Sarah and Martha.
A brief ceremony to remember Jim's life will be held on May 6, 2024, at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
The Luyben Dilday Mortuary in Long Beach, California, is assisting with the arrangements for Jim's services.
