In the early morning hours of February 14th, 2019, fifty-seven years to the day after meeting her husband, Raymond Allard, with whom she spent forty-seven years and raised eight children, Peggy Allard, born Margaret Mary Havekorst, passed away. She was eighty-eight years old. She was the daughter of Walter Benedict Havekorst and Margaret Bostian, born in El Centro and raised on a dairy farm until the middle of high school when her father took a job as a banker in Long Beach, CA. She often described that transition as the most difficult of her life, though, in retrospect, her life was defined by sudden endings and beginnings. She attended UC Santa Barbara, was a devoted lifelong member of Delta Gamma and received her BA degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. She worked at Hoag and St. Joseph's hospitals. She founded the Orange District of the California Dietetic Association. A lovely and intelligent young woman, she dated a number of earnest young men and it was during one of those dates that she was the passenger in a significant car accident. The accident compelled her to reevaluate her life and she joined the Sisters of St. Josephs of Orange as a postulant and novice. She spent three years in the convent but was deterred from taking her final vows by her Mother Superior due to her fundamentally non-compliant nature. Following her exit from the convent, she was fixed up on a blind date by mutual friends with her future husband, Raymond. He walked up the path to her door on February 14, 1962 and they were married on May 5th of the same year. They had eight children in the next five and a half years, a number made possible by two sets of twins. After the main tumult of raising a large family subsided, she worked for many happy years as a school health aide for Westminster School District. She loved sewing and working in her beautiful garden. Many outfits, costumes, wedding dresses, blankets, and pillows were designed and sewn by her. All who knew her understood her fondness of her garden. She could bring any plant back to life and we all enjoyed her delicious homegrown avocados. She is predeceased by her sisters Anne Copeland and Louise Neuner and her husband Raymond Edgar Allard. She is survived by her brother Walter B. Havekorst Jr., her eight children, thirteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Her children are as follows: Meg and Brian Oda, Lisa and Andrew Fish, Louise Leininger, Suzanne Parker, Catherine and Bret Ginther, Raymond and Erin Allard, John and Adriana Allard, and Jeanne and John Harris. Her grandchildren include: Jason Filby, Brad and Christopher Schuldes, Danielle Leininger, Stephanie and Paige Parker, Claire and Anna Ginther, Ray and Nicole Allard, and John, Thomas, and Bethany Allard. Her great grandchildren include: Laura May Allard and Irelynn Larsen. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to: St. Hedwig, Los Alamitos, CA.
