Timothy (Tim) Nicholson was born on September 15, 1951, in Redding, CA, to John and Gloria Nicholson, and passed away on February 2, 2021 in Long Beach, CA. He had eight siblings that include Mike (deceased), John, Margaret, Jim (deceased), Elizabeth, Frank (deceased), Danny (deceased), and Thomas.

Tim served a total of five years in the Army as a special forces combat medic, serving two tours during the Vietnam conflict (from Oct. 1969-Oct. 1970, and from Nov. 1970-Oct. 1971). He is a decorated Vietnam veteran and was awarded the following:  National Defense Medal, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Air Medal, Combat Medical Badge, and Vietnam Service Medal. He served the following campaigns:  Tet 60 Counteroffensive, Vietnam Summer-Fall, Counteroffensive Phase VII, Unnamed (AR 672-5-1). President Barack Obama issued a proclamation in 2012, known as the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act. President Trump updated this act in 2017 to establish March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day, when the country will welcome home the Vietnam veterans each year. In 2017 the Brigadier General of Fort Irwin put on a “Welcome Home” luncheon for veterans and families, for which he personally invited Tim and family to join his table.

Tim met his bride, Barbara Summers, in the summer of 1974 when working at the LB Health Department Alcohol Diversion Program. They later married on May 7, 1977 in Long Beach, where they lived most of their live. They have three children:  Harry John Nicholson (Norma), Philip Joseph Nicholson (Shannon), and Kathleen Joyce Nicholson (Nick), and have 4 grandchildren, Jeremy Nicholson, Skylar Nicholson, Jose Ortiz (Marcie), Johnathan Ortiz, 6 great grandchildren, and 3 step grandchildren.

  • U.S. Army, Medical Corps, Combat Medic, Sgt. First Class (1968-1973)
  • Long Beach Police Department (1973-1986): worked in patrol, juvenile, and detectives.
  • Physics research firm, provided management in the following areas: operations, personnel, fiscal, marketing, and project team management for three years.
  • Pearl nuclei manufacturing firm; provided management of administrative operations, marketing and fiscal duties.
  • Pacific Investments, Inc., working in land acquisition/development
  • Educator: taught criminal justice at ITT Tech, and established the first criminal justice forensics lab.

Memberships/Associations:

  • 4 th degree Knight of Columbus, St. Cyprian
  • St. Cyprian Church, Religious Education Teacher: participated religious education program working with junior high students. Tim was passionate in teaching the students how to pray the rosary, and provided rosaries to each of his students. He worked with this group of students through the receiving of first sacraments for penance and communion.
  • Volunteered seven years with Lakewood and Hawaiian Pop Warner Football and Cheer programs

Funeral:  The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2021, at St. Cyprian Catholic Church, which is located 4714 Clark Ave., Long Beach, CA 90808. Parking will be available.  For those attending from home, the funeral mass will be streaming “live”, either on Facebook– search for “St. Cyprian Parish”; or for those who prefer using YouTube, search for “St. Cyprian Church”. It is best to login in a few minutes before the start of the mass.
