On Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The world lost a quiet hero, a devoted family member, and a steadfast friend. Thomas Albert Plante, age 81, of Lakewood, California, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of courage, kindness and love that will never fade.
A proud member of the United States Marine Corps, Tom served from 1963 through 1967. He served with honor during the Vietnam War with Mike Company Third Battalion Third Marines, demonstrating extraordinary bravery in the face of danger, earning the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the battle of Hill 881 South. This honor not only reflected Tom’s sacrifice but also his steadfast commitment to others. Yet, if you asked Tom about it, he would humbly say, “I was just doing my job.”
After returning home, Tom sought work at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, retiring after 43 years. He loved both hunting and camping, particularly when he could include his wife and son on those trips. He also loved working on his jeep, which he lovingly restored. Tom made many friends over the years and is remembered for his ability to listen without judgement, to offer help without hesitation, and to find humor when things were difficult.
Family was the center of Tom’s world. He cherished time with his wife, Dee Dee, and his son Gary. He loved his many nieces and nephews and found great joy in his great-nieces and great-nephews.
Tom is survived by his wife of 58 years, Winifred (Dee Dee), his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, along with many cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Frances Plante, a brother and sister who died in infancy, and his beloved son, Gary Allen.
A memorial service will be held on April 15, 2026 at 11:30 A.M. at Riverside National Cemetery, with full military honors to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in Tom’s name, to the Vietnam Veterans of America, in keeping with Tom’s lifelong dedication to supporting fellow service members.
We will all remember Tom not only for his service to our country, but for the way he made us feel – safe, valued, loved, comfortable, and someone important in his life. In that way, Tom’s service to others never really ended.
