Theresa Maureen Barnard Sherrin was born June, 10 1936 in Los Angeles. She was the only child to James and Theresa Barnard. Theresa attended several Catholic Schools growing up and was involved in many parish groups including Catholic Daughters of America, which was very near to her heart. Her gift of faith and commitment to the church came at Confirmation. From that day forward she walked hand in hand with the Holy Spirit, seeking guidance on her vocation and how she could serve the lord. Theresa graduated from St. Anthony High School in Long Beach in 1954.
In April of 1955 she married her high school sweet heart Don. In July of 1964 they moved to Los Alamitos where they raised their six children; Chris, Susan, Daniel, Paul, Margaret, Jamie. The St. Hedwig parish quickly became her spiritual home. During this time, Theresa volunteered for almost every church ministry that the church had. If there was a need, she was there. Her love of babies and commitment for the right to life led her to join the board of directors at the Life Center in Santa Ana in the late 70’s. This grew to Theresa opening her home to 44 women in crisis pregnancy. With her vision and the efforts of so many people in the church, and community the Precious Life Shelter was opened in 1989. Over the past 35 years Precious Life was her pride and focus. It has grown into an extraordinary facility that will continue to serve women and children in the community for many years to come.
Theresa’s true love was her family. She spent the final years of her life watching her grandchildren grow up, graduate and begin their own families. With a total of fifteen grandchildren and twenty two great grand children, Theresa’s happiest moments were at family gatherings where she could count her blessings and hold the newest baby.
Theresa's list of accomplishments and awards are too long to list here but please know that it was her Family, Faith and Community that gave her the strength and vision to live a blessed life. She will be missed by all but her memory will live on through all of us that she uplifted and supported throughout her long life.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made in her honor to Precious Life Shelter.
