Teresa Nunes

Teresa Nunes, of Lakewood California passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on January 3, 2023, with her family at her side. Teresa was born on January 18,1934 in Bayard, Nebraska. Teresa spent her early years in Bayard among her immediate and extended family. On February 4, 1950, she married Martin Nunes Sr in the Bayard Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Martin and Teresa moved to Alliance, Nebraska to begin their life together. In 1956 they moved to Southern California to lay their roots. As a dedicated homemaker Teresa put her dream of being a teacher on hold to raise their seven children. Once her younger children reached adolescence, she went back to school to complete her education. She then made
her dream a reality and became a preschool teacher at Wonderland Preschool in Bellflower and then a schoolteacher at Long Beach Unified School District until her retirement.

Teresa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved animals, especially her cats. She was known for being kind to everyone, and she will be dearly missed by her loving family and everyone who knew her. Teresa is preceded in death by her husband Martin Nunes Sr., her parents Raymond and Emma Abeyta, and sisters Betty Abeyta and Carolyn Osby. She is survived by her seven children Judy Nunes, Martin (Catherine) Nunes, Denise Nunes Castaneda, Teri (Dwight Ziegler) Nunes, Matthew (Barbara) Nunes, Vincent (Yolanda) Nunes, and Mario Nunes. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, January 23, 2023, at Luyben Mortuary in Long Beach, CA from 3:00-7:00PM. Funeral Mass will be January 24, 2023, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Lakewood, CA at 10:30AM. She will be laid to rest at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, CA. A reception will follow at the Lakewood Country Club.
