James Edward Smigla
September 20, 1983 – May 17, 2026
Long Beach, California
James Edward Smigla passed away surrounded by the love of his family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. While his time here was far too short, the impact he made on those around him was immeasurable.
James was a devoted husband to his wife, Jessica, and an incredible father to his daughters, Chloe and Cora, who were the center of his world. He was the kind of dad every child deserves — loving, present, patient, and endlessly proud of his girls. His family meant everything to him, and he dedicated his life to creating memories, laughter, and love with them.
James proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for five years. Following his military service, he joined the Long Beach Police Department, where he dedicated his career to serving and protecting his community. During his time with LBPD, he worked in several different details before ultimately finishing his career with the rank of Sergeant.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jessica Smigla; his beloved daughters, Chloe and Cora Smigla; his parents, Steven and Deborah Smigla; his sister, Nicole Rivera, her husband Mark, and their daughter Camille; along with countless friends, extended family members, and brothers in law enforcement, who loved him deeply.
James was known for his kindness, his sense of humor, his intelligence, and the respect he showed everyone he came into contact with. He had a way of making people feel welcomed and valued, and the friendships he built throughout his life ran deep. Whether he was making people laugh, sharing stories, or simply being there when someone needed him, James left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
Though he will be missed beyond words, his memory will live on through the love he gave, the family he cherished, and the countless lives he touched.
