Robert Henry Young
Born October 14, 1924 in Huntington Park, California to Ulysses Grant Young and Helen Bertha Ruehle Young, Bob peacefully entered his eternal rest on Thursday, April 5, 2018. His journey, begun in his baptism, ended as he confessed, “I know that my Redeemer lives" (Job 19). He knew Jesus was his Savior and looked forward to eternal life with Christ. Each of us will miss his special blessing, “I love you and all your family very much”.
At 93, Bob was the last of his generation. He is now enjoying a wonderful reunion with Betty, his wife of 60 years, his parents, his younger sister, and brother, Beverly Dahlquist and Grant Harold Young. Grant and Beverly both passed away in 2017.
Bob is deeply missed by his children, Nancy (Harold), Philip, Rev. Victor (Debora), David (Lesa) and Andrew (Elaine); 18 grandchildren and their families; 13 great-grand children; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Folks at The Gathering (First Lutheran Church) and in his neighborhood are feeling the loss of their dear friend.
A veteran of WWII, Bob served on a B-24 in the 8th Air Corp, 389th Bomb Group. Stationed in England, was a gunner and flight engineer. During his tour he flew 35 successful missions and achieved the rank of Tech Sgt. He enjoyed 8th Air Corp reunions and kept in touch with his fellow crew members for many years.
He earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from CSULB and worked as a design draftsman and checker for 40 years in the aerospace and other commercial industries. His interest in electricity and how things worked followed him home. We were the only family on the block with an ohm meter, and the only kids who got math homework help with the assistance of Dad’s slide rule.
Bob was interested in so many things. He was a railroad enthusiast, gardener, fisherman, home root beer brewer, marathon runner, naturalist, and birdwatcher. He loved to share stories and memories with anyone and everyone. He loved his family.
Dad once cautioned that when you asked God to use you, hang on because you’re going for a wild ride. Bob’s wild ride involved serving the church, families, and children in many roles at Bethany Lutheran and First Lutheran, finding many ways to love his neighbors, and neighborhoods. Because First Lutheran was located in the Anaheim Neighborhood area, Dad put his love of research to good use and worked to get nonprofit status for the Anaheim Neighborhood Association. The LBPD recognized his achievement. When gave up driving began using the bus to get around, he began a ‘bus ministry’, sharing God’s love with fellow riders.
Integrity and faithfulness were two of Dad’s finest traits. It was our joy to watch God work mightily in Dad’s life in large and small things.
