Robert E. Johnson, Sr.
Robert E. (Bob) Johnson, Sr. passed away at home on Tues., Dec. 29, 2015. He was able to enjoy his final Christmas surrounded by his family. He died at the age of 85. Bob had suffered from serious medical problems for many years, yet outlived his medical prognosis by more than 25 years, enabling him to experience and enjoy time with his six children, twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren! Bob is survived by his wife, Janet, of 58 years, 3 sons, Jeffry, Jay and Joel-all current or former Long Beach Police Officers-and 2 daughters, Jami and Jennifer. Bob was preceded in death by his youngest son, Robert, Jr. (Robbie) in 1989. Bob was a former Long Beach Parks and Recreation employee (1956-1972) and the Senior Director at several LB parks. He was forced into early retirement due to medical reasons. He graduated from Wilson HS in Long Beach and received his Bachelor's degree from Fresno State University. He was a star baseball player (pitcher) in high school and college, and played some minor league ball until he injured his pitching arm and had to give up on his dreams of a baseball career. Bob served in the U.S. Army (Korea) from 1953 -1955. A Memorial Service is planned for Jan. 17, 2016 at 6pm at the RLDS/Community of Christ Church, 3525 Elm Ave. Long Beach, CA 90807.
