Richard Stammerjohn Profile Photo

Richard Stammerjohn passed on October 4 at the age of 91. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in July 1927 and lived there with his twin brother, two other brothers and a sister. He served in the Army and earned an aeronautical engineering degree at Purdue University. After graduation in 1951, he married Janet and they moved to El Segundo, California soon after. He worked at Douglas Aircraft Company (later McDonnell Douglas) and retired after almost 40 years, retiring as a systems engineer working on the C-17 aircraft program. He lived in Long Beach for most of that time, enjoying sailing, building and fixing things around the house, volunteering at Bethany Lutheran Church, and assisting with his sons’ Boy Scout troop. He always set an example of honesty, integrity, and hard work for his family and friends.

His wife Janet passed away in 1994 and in 1999 he married Marcia; thirteen years later they moved to Leisure World. He was an avid bridge player, enjoyed playing in the dartball league at his church, and loved reading about history. His children took advantage of his love of card games, playing many games of cribbage with him during his last few months.

He is survived by his wife, four children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
