Richard John Ludwig Jr., age 65, of Long Beach, CA, passed away on August 15, 2025. He was born in San Pedro, California, to Mary and Richard Ludwig Sr. A dedicated husband and loving father, Richard lived his life with faith, integrity, and devotion to his family and community.

Richard dedicated 31 years of his life to serving with the Los Angeles Police Department. Throughout his distinguished career, and in every part of his life, he was known for his integrity, compassion, and fierce determination. He led with acceptance, carried himself as a true leader, and remained calm and precise in the midst of chaos — qualities that inspired both his fellow officers and his community.

In addition to his decades of service, Richard trained Marines and elite officers in tactical operations, earning deep respect for his skill, discipline, and leadership under pressure. He stood up for people based not on status, but on their character, their work ethic, and the way they treated others. His infectious smile and boisterous laugh lit up every room he entered, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Richard’s legacy extends beyond his years of service and in the skills he passed onto others. He had a special way of connecting with people. His infectious joy, steady presence, and unwavering sense of fairness touched everyone around him. To his family, he was a safe place and a source of unconditional love; to his community, he was a leader and protector. He will be remembered not only for his service, but for his heart.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane; his children, Richard Ludwig III, Matthew, and Daniel; his daughter in laws Marlena and Lisa; his grandchildren, Katelyn, Jackson, and Luke; his siblings, John Ludwig and Elizabeth Simon; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mary and Richard Ludwig Sr., and his younger brother, Jim Ludwig.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, September 19th, at 9:30am at St. Cornelius, with a celebration of life immediately following at the Elks Club in Huntington Beach. Friends, family, and all who were touched by Richard’s life and leadership are welcome to attend.
