Richard Daniel Durst lived a very private life, but once you got to know him he would open up just as a butterfly would spread its wings getting ready to fly into the world. Richards journey in life took him to California where I met him at the Salvation Army. I was immediately drawn to his beautiful smile and charisma that would light up a room. People would comment how smart, sweet & what a kind soul he was to those that he met. I had the privilege to work alongside Richard for many years, and we shared and bonded through our life experience, knowing that we could rely on one another no matter what life obstacles came our way - and that’s how our friendship was until the end. I truly believe our Lord brings certain people into our lives. God knew that Richard would need someone strong to carry him at his times of weakness, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way because this is why I was brought here to do, my Gods work. I would look into Richards eyes in his final days on this earth and ask “Why is that you fight so hard” and he replied “because you love me, and I have a huge support system. I wouldn’t have been able to do deal any of this without you”. I smiled back and caressed his cheek trying to bring him comfort, knowing in my heart that Richard was getting ready to spread his wings again to fly into the heavens - and so he did, on Sept 11th 2017. I know that my sweet Richard is finally free of all his suffering, he will be missed by many and it’s the memories that we created & shared with Richard that will live on FOREVER in our hearts. Until we meet again, my Richard, there will not be a day that goes by that I won’t think of you, or a place that reminds me of the memories we’ve created. I love you, my beautiful butterfly.

Richard attended Brandeis University and was an accomplished pianist. He possessed a sharp intellect and keen sense of humor, cherished his friendships, and truly enriched the lives of all who knew him. He is survived by his parents Robert and Leonor Durst of Ocala, Florida and brother David Durst of Massachusetts.
