After providing many years of joy and laughter, Randall “Randy” Edward Means of Long Beach, California, age 74, left this world, assured the yarns he spun would live on forever. Randy passed away on June 7, 2024 after a sudden illness. He was surrounded by his three children, who retold his stories and jokes at his bedside.
Randy was born on June 11, 1949 in Columbus, Ohio to Willa Mae and Woodrow Wilson Means. He was an older brother to fellow jokester Rocky Means. While in the Navy and stationed on Oahu, Hawaii, Randy met Carol Sue, a woman who would prove to be the love of his life. Soon, they became parents to three children: Kimberly, Douglas, and Todd. Eventually, he would be joined by five grandchildren: Clark, Aidan, Cole, Electra, and Pfeiffer. He loved being a Grandpa; maybe even more than he loved being a Dad.
Randy Means was a man of many puns, but he was born of few means. Despite that, his hard work, intelligence, and charm saw him carve out a successful life. Randy became the first member of his family to graduate from college after completing his Bachelor’s degree at California State University, Fullerton. He oversaw the construction of an entire hospital at Rancho Los Amigos in Downey, California. He traveled three continents. However, it was clear that the moments that meant the most to Randy weren’t so ostensibly grand. Whether it was cracking wise with his best friends on the golf course or enjoying a backyard barbecue with family, Randy was happiest when he was surrounded by the people he loved.
A memorial service will be held for Randy at Skylinks Golf Course — where he was a member — in Long Beach, California at 4800 E. Wardlow Road, Long Beach, CA 90808 on June 29, 2024 at 10 am. Lunch will follow, along with an opportunity to tell his stories again.
