Randy Karavanich was born in Steubenville, Ohio on May 24, 1945 to parents Pete and Marie Karavanich. He passed away peacefully at home on September18, 2022.
He attended and graduated from St. Paul’s grade school and Madonna High School, both in Weirton, West Virginia. He attended West Liberty College in West Virginia, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force in March 1966. He served in Vietnam and was discharged in November 1971. He then moved to Southern California and served as an Air Marshall for 3 years. After traveling around the country during his stint as an Air Marshall, he joined the U.S. Customs Service, and was stationed at both Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, California and the Los Angeles Harbor, Terminal Island, California, where he processed passengers, climbed aboard ships and created a lot of heartache and havoc for those who sought to smuggle drugs and counterfeit merchandise into the U.S.
He retired after 38 years with the U.S. Customs, but soon grew bored with retirement, and volunteered for Fish and Wildlife in Orange County, California. He subsequently applied for and was approved as a contract worker by the FBI Background Investigation Unit (“BICS”), where he conducted background investigations for State and Federal government employee candidates, as well as conducting re-investigations for local police department officials.
He retired from BICS in 2019, due to health issues, and spent the remainder of his “golden years” having regular brunches with his Custom’s retiree friends, watching war movies, game shows and documentaries and catching up with old friends via email and phone.
Randy is survived by his wife, Peggy, son, Peter, cousins, Cheryl Smith, Sammy Jo Bosnic and Fred Bosnic and four grandchildren.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
RIP, Randy.
