It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of “Coach Mike”.
Michel McMahon Sr. passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at the age of 74. Mike was born in Lucy, Tennessee on July 29, 1949, to James and Nancy McMahon, high school sweethearts. The family relocated to Sterling, Colorado where Mike and his 3 brothers, Jerry, Mark and Jimmy were raised.
Several years later the family moved to Redondo Beach. Mike and his brothers graduated from Aviation High School. Obtaining a wrestling scholarship, Mike went to Colorado State. Upon leaving Colorado, he relocated to the South Bay where he met his wife, Helen. They married on June 28, 1972, and had 3 children. As a certified mechanic, he began a career as an Inside Installer with General Telephone in Long Beach.
Upon having children, he discovered a passion for youth sports. He was a volunteer Little League coach, a Pop Warner football coach and high school football coach. He had a true love for youth sports and for his players of 40+ years.
He is survived by his wife, Helen and their three children, Tara and her husband Cory, Michel Jr. and his wife Jackie and Thomas (TJ) and his wife Danyel. He is also survived by his brothers, Mark, and Jerry, his wife, Donna and his sister-in-law Christy, as well as nine grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his brother, Jimmy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local High School sports programs.
“Coach Mike”, husband, Dad and Grandpa – you will truly be missed.
