Max Alan Johnson was born on May 28, 1939, in Missoula, Montana to Herbert and June Johnson. He was the third of four boys, along with Noel, Gale and Gary. He was raised in Florence Montana and attended Florence Carlton Grade and High School; where he played varsity basketball, baseball, and football.
In 1958, after graduating high school, Max moved to Long Beach, California to work as a painter for Jim Pratt. Jim was a close friend of the family who taught Max the painter trade where he spent his entire career, first with Jim Pratt, then Damas Construction and finally with the City of Long Beach, until he retired at 67.
After moving to Long Beach, Max attended a pool party where he met the love of his life, Donna Maria Wunder. They were married in June of 1961. In September of 1962, they welcomed twin boys Terry and Jerry. Six years later, in June 1968, their daughter Robin was born. They were happily married for 58 years until Donna’s passing in December 2019.
Max was known for his quick wit. He had a funny response for just about every question asked or for any situation he found himself in.
His kindness was his greatest strength. Always willing to help, he put others above himself.
With his aversion to flying, Max and Donna spent their retirement years taking road trips to their favorite locations and seeing family. Most of their joy came from spending time with their five grandchildren: Rachel, Michelle, Nicole, Rebecca and Samuel. They were an integral part of their grandchildren’s lives. They were always present at all of the kid’s activities and there for us whenever we needed him. Family was the center of Max’s life, and we were beyond blessed to be his children.
