Mary Ann (Lacher) Young passed away on April 28, 2020, at the age of 93, from cardiopulmonary arrest and congestive heart failure. She was a longtime resident of Long Beach, California, although at the time of her death she lived at Atria del Sol Assisted Living in Mission Viejo, California. The Young family expresses deep appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff, who assisted Mary Ann during her final months of life.

Mary Ann was born October 7, 1926, in Sandusky, Ohio, the first child of Edward Lacher and Amelia Hecht Lacher. Eight years later, she was joined by a sister, Patricia, her only sibling who died in an automobile accident in 1969. Mary Ann grew up in Ohio and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1944.

In 1947 Mary Ann married James Anthony Young (Jim), the love of her life and husband for more than 65 years, at St. Mary’s Church in Sandusky, Ohio. After their marriage, the Youngs lived in South Bend, Indiana (while James attended Notre Dame University) and then the state of Washington (while James worked for the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton). In the mid-1950s, the Youngs moved to Long Beach, California, where they raised their family, when Jim transferred to the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Together, they had eight children. As members of the Catholic Church, the Youngs attended St. Cornelius in Long Beach.

Mary Ann enjoyed being a mother, knitting, crocheting, playing bridge, traveling, music, and watching the British television series Grantchester. Some highlights of her life included family weddings; trips to Bali, Germany, and Britain; and her 90th birthday celebration, surrounded by extended family and friends. Her advice to her loved ones is “to be good and tell the truth and have a love of God—that’s what makes good people.”

Mary Ann is predeceased by her husband, parents, sister, and two sons (Chuck and Bob). Mary Ann is survived by 6 children: Mike (Amy), Jim Jr. (Rosey), Betty (Doug), John (Debbie), Paul, and Patty (Gary); 18 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She will be buried at Riverside National Cemetery on May 13, 2020.
