Marie Roudine

Marie Roudine, beloved wife, mother and longtime Rossmoor resident, has died. She was deeply loved by family and friends who will miss her generous heart and striking presence. She was a founding member of the St. Hedwig Parish community and worked with the Catholic nuns teaching at the school. Marie also volunteered at Rossmoor and Lee schools. Along with her mother, she gave comfort to the many senior elderly who were in assisted living facilities. She generously made up Christmas gift packages for residents over several years.

Marie was born on May 15, 1934, in Gary, Indiana. At age 10 she moved with her family to Los Angeles. She was an energetic and motivated worker, eventually pursuing her passion and training as a nurse. She worked for a medical doctor in downtown Los Angeles. She soon met a young sailor, Roy Roudine, who was intensely attracted to her beauty, strong character and delightful personality. They married in Immaculate Conception Church, where she had attended school, on August 16, 1952. They moved into their new home in Rossmoor on September 11, 1959, the first move-ins on Shakespeare Drive, with their two young daughters, Lynette and Maureen. They loved living in such a vibrant, new neighborhood, and kept the home when Roy’s corporate promotion moved the family to the San Francisco region for a year. They then returned to resume life in Rossmoor.

After her early motherhood, Marie re-entered the work-a-day world, becoming a highly valued industrial purchasing agent. Eventually retiring early, she travelled with and assisted her husband as he developed his business. She also enjoyed much leisure travel, with several European and Canadian trips, as well as Pacific and Mediterranean cruises. A highlight was when they personally met with St. Pope John Paul II, at his summer residence, Castle Gandolfo. Also cherished is their family friend and counsellor, Father Rafael Luevano, whom they first met at St. Hedwig’s. He has been a great comfort to Marie and her family over many years.

Marie passed away on July 8, 2017, and is survived by her husband of 65 years, Roy, and daughters Lynn (Robert) And Maureen, several cousins and countless dear friends, including Fr. Ken Schmit, once Pastor of St. Hedwig’s and now Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena.

Funeral services are Wednesday, July 19, 12:30 PM at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Los Alamitos, followed by interment at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach.
