Maricela Chavez, 41 passed away peacefully on May 13, 2022, in Santa Monica at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical center.
Born in Long Beach, California, Maricela was the daughter of Antonio and Carmen Chavez. She was an amazing mom Oscar and Myrna Chacon and an awesome sister to Hivelis Velasco and Antonio “Tony” Chavez. She was also a great “Tia” to many nieces and nephews.
Maricela was a free-spirited, loving, kind, and welcoming person. “My mom was a true fighter that didn’t give up and stayed joyful throughout her fight.” With her loving and welcoming personality, she made so many friends along her journey even though she wasn’t able to speak. She was very non-judgmental. You could tell her anything and she would figure out a way to help you.
Maricela’s journey the last 5 ½ months had many ups and downs…but it not only proved to us who she was and her strength, but it also showed that she was a warrior and a strong fighter. She even started to find herself and started to be who she wanted to be… She referenced herself as MARICELA 2.0. Through all the tough moments, she kept a smile on her face and this, “I GOT THIS AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME” attitude. She fought so hard. She proved and surprised many doctors and nurses. “My mom worked her way to gaining mobility, standing up, drinking water, eating solid food, physical therapy every day and learning how to communicate again.” No matter what she was going through, she still looked out for her family and gave advice or her opinion. She taught us to live in the moment and not take things for granted. She discussed with us that butterflies flying by is her saying “hi” and checking in.
