Manuel Hernandez passed away at the age of 95 on the 5th of March 2019 surrounded by his devoted wife, Olga, and their family at Los Alamitos Hospital.
Manual was born in Marfa, Texas, son of Paz and Tomas Hernandez. At age 6, his family moved to El Paso, which he considered his home town in Texas and where he met his wife. He resided in Paramount, California from 1960 to 2018, and moved to Long Beach a few months before his passing. He stood as a decorated soldier who served in the US Army for 11 years and fought during WWII and the Korean War. He was employed as a warehouseman with Safeway Stores and retired in 1985 at 63 years.
Manuel became an active volunteer at St. Cyprian’s Church while his grandchildren attended there. He was an active member of the Disabled American Vets and participated in the Long Beach Veterans Parade for many years. He loved music, the outdoors, camping and traveling in his RV. He is remembered for his love of family, country, and community, strong work ethic, a desire to help and serve others, and his great sense of humor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Olga Hernandez. Daughters and sons-in-law: Cecilia Dena, Herlinda & Gilbert Estrada, Graciela & Michael Torres, Josefina Blaylock and Luz Maria & Victor Zavala. Grandchildren and their spouses: Anna & Brian Verbeck, Diana & Mike Cleland, George Dena, Yvonne & Rodney Madokoro, Manuel III & Cory Aguilar, Anthony & Angela Abeyta, Abel &Ana Abeyta, Victor Jr & Sonya Zavala, Kristina & Scott Bobadilla, Elisa & Michael Jauregui, Gilbert Estrada Jr, Monica Zavala, and Robert Estrada. Great-grandchildren: Brianna and Nickole Verbeck; Michael Cleland Jr; Joshua, Cody, Mekenzie, and Sunny Madokoro; Pernice and Christopher Seei; Linda, Thomas, Cameron, Savanah, and Izaiah Aguilar; Katelyn, Jocelyn, and Logan Abeyta; Isabella, Victor III, and Gabriela Zavala; Isaac Arredondo, and Delilah Bobadilla; Alyssa, Michael Jr, Bianca Jaurique and Carlos Flores. Great-great-grandchildren: Kaleia Emiko Madokoro, Beverly Kalani Seei, Bernise Kuliana Lynee Bluford, and Jaspar James Jordan.
Services include a rosary held on March 17 at the Luyben Dilday Mortuary in Long Beach at 5:00. The memorial service will be held on March 18th at 11:00 at St. Cyprian Church in Long Beach, with interment at All Souls Cemetery. A “Celebration of Life” reception will follow.
