Leona Catherine (Katie) Campion

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Katie Campion, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to so many, who passed away peacefully at home with family.

Katie was born on February 25, 1930, in Los Angeles to Susan Roach and Robert Christopher Mulligan. She was predeceased by her parents and older brother, Robert James Mulligan. Katie’s family moved to Long Beach in the early 1940s. She graduated from Saint Anthony's High School in Long Beach in 1947 and attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles thereafter.

On February 2, 1952, she married James T. Campion. They shared 31 years of marriage and raised four children before his premature death in 1983. She navigated the challenges of managing a family business and raising four children with grace and tenacity.

Her commitment to family and community was a defining aspect of her life. She loved hosting family gatherings, an early morning round of golf, and an afternoon bridge game. Katie was a member of the Virginia Country Club and she built a legacy of generosity and service as a member of Our Lady of Refuge YLI, the Assistance League of Long Beach, the Ebell Club of Long Beach, and volunteer at Saint Mary's Hospital.

Katie is survived by her four children, James Jr. (Linda), Marie, Steve (Joyce), and Nora (Dave); her grandchildren, Patrick (Jacqueline), Erin, Shannon (Collin), Allyson (Jared), Brianne (Chris), Caitlin, and James Stephen; and her great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Elliott, and Rowan.

In Katie’s honor, donations may be made to the Assistance League of Long Beach. Services will be held at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, 5195 Stearns St., Long Beach, on May 17th at 10:00 AM. Also, please join us in remembering Katie by attending her Celebration of Life, which will be held following the service on May 17 at Old Ranch Country Club, 3901 Lampson Ave., Seal Beach, from 11:30AM to 1:30PM.
