Josephine Arredondo Gaska
March 26th, 1934 – January 21st, 2019

Josephine Arredondo Gaska, 84, of Lakewood, California, passed away peacefully at home on January 21st, 2019, with her loving family by her side.
Josephine (Josie) was born on March 26th, 1934, in Compton, California. She was one of nine children born to Jose Arredondo and Margarita Espinoza Arredondo. After moving to Norwalk, California, Josie and her siblings helped their father in running the family farm. By providing produce for all the nearby military camps, Josie learned the value of hard work and the real meaning of family. Josie attended Excelsior High School where she enjoyed playing tennis and socializing with friends. At the age of 24, she married the love of her life, Gilbert Gaska. Gilbert and Josephine had three children and together made their home in Lakewood, California. They were married for over 58 years before Gilbert’s passing in 2017. Josie was a determined mother who successfully juggled working full-time, all while keeping the home and children well taken care of. It was very seldom that she missed her children’s sports games or other activities. She continued this trend with her grandchildren, as well as her great grandson. One of Josie’s greatest passions was her garden. She was known to have the greenest thumb around and many knew her by name at the local nursery. Josie also had a great talent for sewing; creating many beautiful garments and costumes both in her career as well as for her family.
Josie was a fighter who was tested frequently in her lifetime. Through her many challenges she taught loved ones that it was always possible to overcome in the face of adversity. In times of strife she leaned deep into her faith, and wholeheartedly believed that the Lord would never give her anything she couldn’t handle. Through her fierce love, acceptance of others, and kind heart- it was clear to see that Josie was truly one of a kind.
Josephine has now been reunited with her parents, Jose and Margarita; husband, Gilbert; son, Gilbert Jr.; and brothers, John and Eliojio. She is survived by her children, Diane (Dennis) and Steve (Tracy); grandchildren, Ashlee (Chris), Shea, Garrett, Erin, Kacey, and Nick; great grandson, Paxton; sisters, Lupe and Sara; and brothers, Jess, Frank, Joe, and Art.
