Obituary
Joseph Michael Magdaleno Sr.
It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the loss of Joseph Michael Magdaleno Senior. Joseph passed away on the evening of February 27, 2024, following a stroke the prior week. Born in Los Angeles, California to Tomas Negrete Magdaleno and Maria Luisa Loera on January 26th, 1929, he was the eldest of their four children. Joseph was raised in Los Angeles County; more specifically, in a quiet little town that would later gain greater notoriety in some circles called Compton. A vibrant teen and young adult, he whiled away his college days as an active member of his community participating in the local drama club, making friends and rivals on the tennis courts, and bringing passion to every aspect of his young life.
Years later in the early morning of June 23, 1948, Joseph felt a sense of duty and enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves. Bringing his innate passion and discipline to this new world, he worked hard to support the on-base Medical Units in a post WWII era; a duty he completed seven years later when he was honorably discharged on June 23,1955. These years of service were formative and became key in guiding Joseph’s later journey into the civilian life and workforce. With his profound sense of discipline, decorum, and instantly making connections with others, he ventured into Sales and joined Borden Industrial Adhesives. Quickly ascending the ranks with his signature fortitude, he built lifelong connections as he quickly became their top Sales Representative. Charming client and stranger alike, Joseph made several smart business decisions throughout the 1950’s and onwards. When he eventually transitioned to work for API Adhesives, his loyal clientele followed and stuck with him until his retirement.
Known for his firm handshake and for gifting charming bunny, teddy bear, and heart-shaped American flag stickers to everyone he met, he built a lifetime of creating a lasting impact. Whether bringing a small ray of happiness to others' days or sharing a few packets of coffee sweetener at the dining table, he led a life of profound giving and appreciation for the little things. Content with his vast lifetime of accomplishments, Joseph spent his sunset years simply in his Lakewood home. And he lived out his days his way. With an American flag hanging outside his door and donning a vintage suit for a touch of class... Joseph will always be fondly remembered for his generosity and friendly wave. A class act through-and-through, Joseph’s lifetime of discipline became a legacy of kindness and service to others.
He is survived by his sister, Rose, and brother, Manuel; by his children, Annette, Carolyn, Mary, Joseph, Trish, and Darrin; and by his 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He will be fondly remembered by all those he left behind.
We love you, Dad. Thank you, Grandpa.
