Joseph Martin Lopes Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on February 21, 2025, in Norwalk, California. JR or Papa, as he was affectionately known, was born on August 20, 1941, in Tulare, California, to Joseph Lopes Sr. and Virginia Lopes, both of whom predeceased him. Throughout his life, he showed an unwavering commitment to family and service.
After his education, Joe served his country diligently from 1964 to 1966 in the United States Army. His service took him across various states, including Louisiana, Texas, and Massachusetts, and he was deployed to Vietnam. Joe's time in the military was marked by dedication and honor, attributes that he carried into his civilian life.
Joseph's interests extended beyond his service. A fervent enthusiast of firearms, he held a profound interest in Colt and Winchester models and was a life member of both the National Rifle Association and the California Rifle and Pistol Association. His admiration for the craftsmanship and history of firearms was well-known among his family and friends. Additionally, Joseph bore a lasting passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles and Ford Motor Vehicles, which were equally integral to his identity, representing a source of joy and personal freedom. Joe’s enthusiasm for life extended to his support of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his vibrant spirit was ever-present as he cheered for his favorite team.
Joe found his community within his family, where his devotion and affection knew no bounds. Above all, he was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family's well-being and happiness were always at the forefront of his mind, and he found immense joy in their accomplishments and gatherings.
Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph Lopes, and daughters, Doreen Sanchez and Stephanie Gibbons, 7 Grandchildren, Matthew, Kimberly, Anthony, Jessica, Karissa, Bradley and Tyler, and 10 Great Grandchildren, Sofia, Aria, Evan, Connor, Madilyn, Joey, Isabella, Maverick, Elliana, and Landon. He also leaves behind his siblings: Rose Marie Lopes, Jaqueline Lopes, John Lopes, and Barbara Mahakian, who shared many memories of the bond that siblings uniquely hold. He is preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Lopes.
Family and friends are invited to honor Joseph's life at a funeral service on Saturday, April 5, at 2:00 p.m. The service will be held at Luyben Dilday Mortuary, located at 5161 E Arbor Rd, Long Beach, CA 90808.
Though no longer with us, Joseph's spirit and the love he shared with his family will forever guide those privileged to have known him. His life, rich in affection and simple wisdom, is a cherished mosaic of joyful memories he created throughout his 83 years.
