On July 4, 2023, John Patrick McFadyen, 61, of Lakewood, California, passed away, surrounded by his beloved parents, and other members of his tightly knit group of friends and family.
John was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 28, 1961, and although he relocated with his family to Long Beach, California in 1969, he always held a special place in his heart for the land of his birth, wearing his kilt, and competing regularly in the Scottish Highland Games. He graduated from St. Anthony High School and attended Long Beach City College, showcasing his extraordinary talents on the football field and on the track in a variety of throwing events, contributing to the 1981 LBCC State Championship Track and Field team.
John is survived by his parents, Archie and Mary, his brother Paul, his Aunt Bridget (Theiss). He is also survived by his long-time girlfriend, Christina Ramos, and his Goddaughter, MacKenna Geneva Murray, who is heartbroken over the loss of her ‘Uncle John’ and their weekly heart to hearts.
John worked at St. Mary’s Medical Center for nearly 10 years, then Laidlaw Gas Recovery & Coyote Canyon Energy, LLC for 28 years. Most recently, John dedicated his time to coaching and developing ‘his throwers’ at Long Beach City College, leading athletes to League titles, State Championships, and All-American status. When John was not coaching athletes, he could often be found in the LBCC weight room or at other LBCC events encouraging all athletes to be the best they could be.
If you met John 50 years ago, or 5 weeks ago, you were a friend for life. He would welcome you into his circle and do all it took to make you feel like you were someone special. John created friends that became family, many of whom treated him like a big brother or uncle, and others only knew Archie and Mary as ‘dad’ and ‘mom’.
Besides his dedication to Saint Anthony and LBCC sports, John was also a die-hard Notre Dame football fan, proudly wearing his green and gold, even in the face of the many cardinal and gold wearing fans of Notre Dame’s biggest rival, taking great satisfaction in the fact that Notre Dame owned the other school for 7 of the past 10 years.
A 500-page novel could not encapsule the kind thoughts and comments shared by many about the impact John made on their life, but two particular comments could be echoed by all…’he was one of the good ones’ and ‘a kinder soul there never was’.
John’s family and friends invite you to join in saying our last goodbyes to John. His memorial services will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 11:00 am at St. Cyprian Catholic Church, with a reception to immediately follow in the church hall.
