John “Bobby” Hogan , age 86, peacefully passed on to his eternal rest on January 8, 2024 in Cerritos, California. He was born to the late Johnny Hogan and Exie B. Mahoney on March 22, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Shortly after being born, he was placed in the loving care of his great aunt, the late Eliza Parson who raised him with the help of her 3 adult children: Ethel Preston, Sally York and O.B. Parson, who all preceded him in death. They considered him as their “baby brother” and by their example, John grew up to be a responsible, compassionate, and devoted Christian man.

John’s family moved to Los Angeles, CA, when he was around 12 years old.  His early education at Bethune Jr High School and Fremont High School laid the foundation for a life of service, which continued with his honorable tenure in the United States Army from 1955 to 1960 where is spent several months in Korea following the Korean War.

After returning home from serving in the Army, John fell in love and married the love of his life, Margaree Warmsley on April 28, 1962. Together they had two children, Jeffrey Hogan and Debra (Hogan) Steward. John was blessed to be married to Margaree for 61 years. He was truly a family man who cherished spending quality time with his wife, his children, his grandchildren and his extended family; attending plays, recitals, games, and hosting holiday dinners at their home. John achieved success not just as a family man but also in his career. His career path led him to Bristol Myers where he become a top sales representative and then to Allstate Insurance, as a trailblazer, becoming one of the first Black sales managers in the company. John led a life marked by steadfast faith in God, enduring love for his family, and a noble dedication to his community.

A man of deep faith, John accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at a young age, and was a dedicated member of Greater Holy St John Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles for over 60 years. He served as the Director of BTU (Bible Training Union) where he helped countless youth and young adults learn about the Bible in a fun and exciting ways. He was a dedicated Youth

Leader who often took the youth of Greater Holy St John and the community on numerous trips to Magic Mountain, Knott’s Berry Farm and to the snow in Big Bear. He also served as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was well- loved and admired by the entire congregation.  When he wasn’t called Brother Hogan, he was affectionately called “Uncle Bobby” by both family and non-family members alike.

He lived his beliefs, sharing his love for the Word of God by distributing Bibles as a member of the Gideons International organization well into his late 70’s.

John was also passionate about supporting his community by being a member of 100 Black Men and Men on the Move, two organizations that provide scholarships, mentorship and programs that meet the needs of local communities and develop young people into future leaders.

John’s favorite hobbies included playing golf with his buddies, traveling with his wife and family to different cities and states, and watching the L.A. Lakers games live and on TV with his family. He was a warm, caring person who had the ability to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable in any situation. John was an excellent communicator with a great speaking voice. He was always chosen to be the narrator or play the voice of God in plays and productions. John was also a positive person who always greeted you with a bright smile, a firm handshake, kind words, and a warm hug.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaree Hogan of 61 years; his son, Jeffrey Hogan; his daughter, Debra Steward; daughter-in-law, Annette Hogan, son-in-law, Jabari Steward; and his precious granddaughters, Alysse and Jasmine Hogan. John's memory will be cherished by his brothers, Zack, Melvin, and Howard Sloan and his sister Glenda “Vone” Lewis; as well as by a blessed assembly of nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Earline Lambert, Faye Haywood, Melvin “Popeye” Hogan and Sonny Hogan. His passing follows that of his parents and his brother, Billy Hogan.
