John C. Hill was born on the 4th of July, 1925, in Long Beach, CA. He was raised in Monrovia, CA, the middle child of 5, growing up with two older brothers and two younger sisters.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946, serving during World War II. He served aboard the USS Saratoga CV-3 in the Pacific theater. He received a Purple Heart, as he incurred injuries during an Iwo Jima Kamikaze attack.
In 1947, he took Barbara May Lancaster as his bride. He was a loyal and loving husband to her for 53 years, until her passing in February 2001. Together, they took up residence in Lakewood, CA, purchasing their home in 1950. They had 2 children, John R. and Nancy. They were the original owners of the home. He lived there for 64 years until poor mobility forced him into a care home in Cerritos, CA.
John’s strong work ethic was an example to many. He worked in heavy construction, mainly as a truck crane operator for more than 35 years. He also was an independent truck driver for 2 years.
In his leisure time, John enjoyed putzing around in his garage (ever the tool guy), dartball at church, a bit of woodworking and jewelry making. After retiring, he took up playing golf and enjoyed travels with Barb.
John was quite the character, with the most photogenic smile. He worked hard most of his life. His body was tired and well worn. He passed on October 30th 2017 at the age of 92. He will be missed by many friends and neighbors but most of all by his family.
John is survived by son John R., daughter Nancy, and daughter-in-law Ellen; 5 grand children: John A., Autumn, Erina, Nicole, and Ellie; 9 great-grand children and 1 great-great grandson. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Nell and many nieces and nephews.
A favorite saying his grandchildren loved to hear from him was “See you Tomorr-E-ow".
You are loved and will be remembered Grandpa until Tomorr-E-ow……
To honor his wishes there will be no funeral service. A private internment will take place on Veterans Day, November the 11th 2017 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Lakewood, CA. In lieu of flowers the family asked that you consider donations to St. Timothy Lutheran Church, the USS Saratoga Association or the charity of your choice, in his memory.
John, now you have your well deserved eternal rest in the arms of Jesus, your Lord.
