John O. Herbold II

"Coach John"

June 27th, 1929-July 27th, 2017

He was a husband for six decades and a father to a daughter and three sons. John Herbold was a legendary and revered high school and college Baseball coach, attaining almost mythical status. He was a beloved and admired English teacher, a published writer--having authored a book and many articles for Collegiate Baseball and a respected Major League Baseball scout. He served both in the United States Army during the Korean War and in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University.

John would not want to be remembered in a mortuary, auditorium, banquet hall or a church chapel--nor even on the sidewalks or parking lots of those places. A remembrance while watching a Baseball game would be most appropriate. And to any student from the past who attended Long Beach Polytechnic High or Lakewood High, and labored through "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Julius Caesar", feel free to recall classroom experiences that linger still. To his former Cal State University Los Angeles Baseball players as a group, please think, "Hail and Farewell, Coach . . . we will remember you well!".

He was several men to many people: "John", to his loyal wife, good friends and colleagues; "Dad", to his loving children; "Mr. Herbold", to his many English students and "Coach" to his many grateful ball players. We now say "Farewell and Thank You" to every man he was . . . and will always be in our fondest memories.

"You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them"

"May the flights of 'umpires' fly thee to thy rest"
