John Charles Bertrand, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was born on July 16, 1933, in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, in Los Angeles, California, surrounded by his loving family.
John was very proud of his contribution to the Apollo Space program as a Systems Analyst for North American/Rockwell in Downey CA. John dedicated a significant part of his life to his career at Xerox Corp., where he proudly served as a Senior Manufacturing Analyst before retiring. Known for his kind and generous spirit, John had a great sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him. His warm personality made him a cherished friend and neighbor in the community.
Family gatherings during holidays were a highlight for John, especially when he prepared his special yams for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. These gatherings were not just meals but celebrations filled with laughter, love, and the creation of lasting memories. John also enjoyed bowling, frequently joining leagues with his wife Norma and their long-time friends, Dick and Bernice Curry. His love for the outdoors shone through in his passions for camping, fishing, and occasional trips to Indian Casinos, where his luck at playing the slots brought him joy.
A proud Korean War Veteran, John served in the Army Artillery division, exemplifying dedication and service to his country. He was a man who cherished both his family and the values instilled in him through his military service.
John leaves behind his loving wife, Norma Caballero Bertrand; his children, John E. Bertrand (Bess), Monica Bertrand-Shick, and Douglas R. Bertrand (Judi); and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the joy of his life. His grandchildren include Vallarie M. Caballes (Victor), Nicole J. Ortega (Jose), Robert J. Shick, Leiana Bertrand, Yvette Bertrand, Ashley Holstine (Ashland), Amber Bertrand (Joshua Finn), and Amanda Vargas (Michael). He was blessed with great-grandchildren: Jayden, Elena, Evan, Julia (Caballes); Isabell, Brooke, Alonso, Karleigh (Ortega); Levi, Leo, Liam (Holstine); and Noah, Cruz (Vargas), along with Violet (Finn).
John joins his deceased family members in eternal peace, including his father, Arthur Charles Bertrand; his mother, Genevieve (Akey) Bertrand; and his siblings—Harriet Tichelaar, Euclyde Bertrand, Genevieve DeBiase, Gladys Pichette, Florence Haley, Marie Gustafson, Mary Jane Blinco, Iren Iverson, and Dolores Mardis—who await him with open arms.
A Rosary will be held in John's honor on August 18, 2025, beginning at 9:30 AM, followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM at the Holy Family Church in Artesia, CA. He will then be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City at 12:00 PM.
John Charles Bertrand's legacy of love, kindness, and laughter will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
