Joan was born Joan Franklin McConnell in Maracaibo, Venezuela on Nov 18th, 1930 to Bob and Dorothy McConnell. Her father, Bob, worked for the standard oil company in Maracaibo. In October of 1933, Joan’s one and only sibling, her sister Judy, was born. Joan and Judy always shared a very close relationship, and though they lived in different states later in life, they never missed their Sunday afternoon phone call. In 1939 the McConnell family moved to Bogota, Colombia for Bob’s job. The girls remained there until high school, when Joan attended Endicott Union High School in New York; during this time, she lived with her maternal aunt and uncle. She then went on to Stephens College in Missouri. After college, Joan moved to Long Beach where she met the love of her life, Hank. They met at a Long Beach Ski Club dinner and were married on October 11, 1952. They bought their first and only house in Lakewood in early 1953, just a few months before their first son Bob was born.  Soon after, daughter Jodi was born, followed by son John and finally baby girl Janet. From 1982 to 1997 they welcomed ten grandchildren: Ashley, Sarah, Aaron, Lauren, Nicholas, Daniel, Joshua, Megan, Matthew, and Jacob.

Papa Hank and Grandma Joan always had a joyful and full house. From 2008 until now, five great grandchildren were given to Joan and Hank: Bella, Julian, Lorelai, Helena, and Colin. Sadly, Hank passed away in 2011, and seven years later the match that was made in heaven in 1952 is now reunited in 2018.
