JEAN AUDREY MOTT
1928 – 2016
Born in a small town in Long Island, NY to Elizabeth and Pierre Walter Latham. In the early 1940’s, Jean loved to roller skate and met her future husband of 55 years, Kenneth Leroy Mott Jr., while skating. They dated until Ken joined the U.S. Marine Corps and left to fight in WWII. At war’s end in 1946, Ken returned and they were married and took up residence in Northport, NY where Ken became a police officer. There, three children were born: Linda, Karen and Walter. In the early 1950’s, the family moved to Long Beach, CA and Ken joined the police force. Both were active in the Retired Police and Firemen of America and the 4th Marine Division Association/the Fighting Fourth of WWII. They enjoyed traveling with the latter and were able to attend the 50th reunion on the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima. Jean was also a member of Kappa Delta Phi – Eta Pi service sorority. Jean’s loves were her family, animals, the ocean, music, reading, good food and wine. She loved the theater, especially ballet, and never missed the Nutcracker at the Terrace or musicals at the Carpenter Center.
Survived by; daughters Linda (William) King, Karen (Thomas) Bowman and son Walter (Kim Phillips) Mott: Two granddaughters Michelle (Blain) Checkley and Jennifer Mott: Two great grandchildren Serena and Gavin Wagner: Her beloved niece Marlene Friedmann and nephew W. Craig Kostello: Grandnephew Sean Friedmann and Muffin the cat.
Predeceased by her husband Kenneth Mott and sister Elaine Kostello.
The celebration of life service will be Saturday, March 19, at 1 pm at Luyben Dilday Mortuary in Long Beach.
Ken and Jean will be returning together to Long Island and laid to rest in a private family ceremony at graveside at a later date.
Her last request was for you to do something kind for someone today and to raise a glass of vino in her memory. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to any children’s or animal causes.
