James Scott Young

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband and father, James Scott Young, on February 26, 2025 at the age of 86.

Jim was born on July 1, 1938 in Long Beach, CA to Robert Young Jr. and Jessie M. Scott Young. He had an older brother Robert and Jim completed their family. He attended Long Beach schools, graduating from Poly High School in 1956.  He worked for Revere Copper and Brass in Santa Ana, CA until starting with the City of Long Beach in 1966.

In 1963, he met the love of his life, Sally Jane Devine.  They married in 1966 and were blessed with one daughter, Julie Ann Young.  Jim continued his work this the city, retiring in 1998, as a Motor Sweeper Operator.

Jim’s retirement was filled with hobbies and adventures.  He loved gardening, feeding the hummingbirds, cooking, ushering at mass and volunteering at the Fiesta, working on his 1962 Corvair, attending the Long Beach Grand Prix, bowling and traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sally; his daughter, Julie; his nephew, Robert (Pam) Young; his niece, Donna (James) Walton; his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Devine; his nieces, Mary (David) Unmacht, Ann (Tom) Strey; and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jessie Young; brother, Robert Young and sister-in-law, Wilma Young; grandnephew, Bobby Young; in laws, Robert Emmett and Katherine Devine; brother-in-law, Tom Devine and sister-in-law, Joanne Devine.

Funeral mass will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Noon, St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 5500 E. Wardlow Rd, Long Beach, CA  90808.
