James (Jim) Lawrence Schorr

Born: June 10, 1931 in Norwalk, California to John & Julia Schorr

Entered Eternity: April 15, 2024

Jim’s father, John Schorr (original “pop”) worked for the State of California building highways; so, during his younger years, the family moved as the highway moved.

Later, Jim attended “Pontifical College Josephinum” in Columbus Ohio, a Roman Catholic Seminary grades 7- 9. He then transferred to Garces High School in Bakersfield, California, where he broke several (if not most) of the sports records, and graduated in 1950.

During this time, his parents moved with the highway; so Jim lived in a room above a mortuary to complete his senior year. He and a friend enjoyed bringing classmates to the mortuary at night and popping out of caskets. After graduating from Garces High School, Jim completed his Associate of Arts (AA) degree at Bakersfield Junior College in 1952. On July 4th, 1952, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Maze.

They started their married life taking care of Barbara’s grandmother, and had their first 4 children in Bakersfield. Jim worked for Santa Fe Railroad and then Monterey Oil Company as a field office clerk/payroll clerk. He was transferred to Long Beach for work and they had 2 more children. He was transferred back to Bakersfield, where they had 1 more child before being transferred back to Long Beach to complete the last 2 of the nine
children and establish their home of 60 + years in Long Beach.

Next, Jim worked for Exxon Oil Company in the Real Estate Department buying properties for gas stations. In 1968, he bought his first property in Pomona and developed it with a Denny’s restaurant. From there, Jim went into business for himself buying and developing properties.

He was a man of Godly principles, he truly believed in the Golden Rule and treated others the way he wanted to be treated. He was a generous man. Anyone who invested in Jim, always came out ahead, and with interest! If someone needed help, he was the first one to help.

Jim was very involved in the parish community at Our Lady of Refuge (OLR) - active in St. Francis Guild and was a lecturer at church well into his 70’s. In the OLR school’s early years, he helped build moveable basketball hoops; painted the lines for the courts; was a referee and a coach.
Jim loved playing fast pitch softball. He was an avid golfer, and belonged to Old Ranch Country Club. He enjoyed the Dodgers, LA Rams, and especially watching his children and family grow. In his retirement years, Jim enjoyed traveling to different golf courses with his wife & friends; spending time with his grandchildren; and of course, buying and developing properties.

Jim was a loving Husband, respected as a Friend, a caring Uncle, understanding as a Father, a blessing to his Grandchildren, and cherished by his Great Grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; as well as his siblings: June, John and Paul. He is survived by the love of his life, Barbara Schorr, his wife of 71+ years, as well as:
