Teele, Jack "Earl"

June 17, 1930-Sep 14, 2017   (87)

Jack Teele, longtime Long Beach resident, passed away on September 14. Teele was born in Bloomington, Illinois to Earl and Elsie Teele and moved to Long Beach at the age of 10. Teele attended Garfield Elementary, Washington Junior High, played basketball and golf for Long Beach Poly High, studied at Long Beach City College, before playing for the first varsity basketball team at Long Beach State from 1951-1952. Jack was named Long Beach State's Outstanding Alumnus in 1971 and to the Long Beach City College Hall of Fame in 1975. Teele served two years with the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps in Japan from 1952 to 1954.

Jack married Marilyn Dawn Hansted Oct 15, 1954 in Long Beach. He shortly thereafter joined the Long Beach Independent Press Telegram where he started covering the Los Angeles Rams. Teele joined the Rams as Director of Public Relations in 1960 and was appointed Assistant to the President in 1969 and  later became Vice President of Administration in 1978.

One of Jack's proudest accomplishments was working with Pete Rozelle, organizing Super Bowl I in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Teele was instrumental in the Rams move from the Los Angeles Coliseum to Anaheim in 1980, working with architects on stadium expansion, contractors and city officials. While in Los Angeles, Teele coined the phrase "the Fearsome Foursome", the feared LA Rams defensive line which included Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosie Greer.

Teele later joined the San Diego Chargers in 1981 serving as Assistant to the President. Teele worked hard on Super Bowl XXII that was in San Diego in 1988, as well as working on Jack Murphy Stadium renovations which saw the stadium expand to 60,000 seats.

The love of Jack's life was his family and he was the ultimate family man. Jack never went anywhere without his love of 63 years, Marilyn. Jack was survived by wife Marilyn, his two daughters, Dana Thurston McElrath Teele and Lisa Owen, and son-in-law Rick Owen. Jack had five grandchildren, Brett and Bryan Thurston, Jaclyn Kennedy and her husband Chris, Jessica Gonzales and her husband Brian, Mallory Roe and her husband Cody. Jack put his family first and that was evident to all.  Jack enjoyed Sunday night dinners with family while discussing politics and sports. If you spent time with Jack, you knew how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. He took pride in their accomplishments and reveled in telling stories about each of them. Jack will be dearly missed and his memory will be cherished.
