Lakewood, CA

Hazel Margaret “Peggy” Klune, passed away, peacefully, in her home on Christmas Eve in Lakewood, California. Peggy was the second to the youngest of 13 children, with her twin sister Pat being the youngest, born to Christine (Beaton) and Patrick LeVangie, of Braintree, Massachusetts.

One of her earliest memories was playing on the steps of John Quincy Adams home after school.

Upon graduation in 1942, Peggy worked as a “Rosie the Riveter,” when she met Anthony Klune, a Chief Petty Officer, at the Avalon Ballroom in Quincy harbor. His battleship was in for repairs and when asked what brought them together, Mom said, “Dad had a sadder story than mine!” His mother died of TB, leaving 5 children to be raised by his father, who worked the iron mines of Chisholm, Minnesota during the day and ran a saloon at night.

Peggy and Tony were married on August 11, 1943 in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Janet Francis of Long Beach, was born in Quincy on October 25, 1944, just four months after D-Day. Jeri Ann of Long Beach, was born on November 16, 1945, upon Dad’s transfer to Norfolk, Virginia.

In 1952, Dad received a two-year commission to transfer to the Naval Station on Terminal Island. In 1954, they purchased their Lakewood home; moving from Navy housing in Long Beach.

Peggy continued her work as a homemaker and was known for her legendary, New England dinners, meatballs with gravy, locally famous grilled cheese sandwiches, and of course, the best chowdah!

Anthony John Jr. was born on January 19, 1960 at Lakewood General Hospital. Tony and his wife Patty, have three children: Katherine Nicole, Samantha Elizabeth and Anthony John, III; reside in Long Beach. Grandson, Steve Michael Brimhall, wife Beth and son Ridge; reside in Kalispell, Montana. Peggy is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and will be buried with Tony Sr. at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California. At her request there will be no services.
