Gustavo Hernandez  was born on July 9th, 1964 to Carmelo and Celia Hernandez in West Los Angeles, CA. Gus was the second born of four brothers, older brother Sergio and his two younger brothers Albert and Ricky.

Gus grew up in South Gate, CA and graduated from Pius X High School in 1982. He worked for his family's restaurant “La Siesta.” Shortly thereafter, in the fall of 1983, he was to meet his future wife-to-be, Irma.

Gus loved the ocean. He would become an avid surfer in his teenage years and would spend the majority of his spare time at the beach, perfecting and honing his craft while cultivating a life-long passion for the sea. I like to think that Gus felt a kinship with the water and became one with the waves as they swelled and propelled him across the glistening surface of the vast expanse that is the deep blue sea.

Gus at one point was so enamored with the sport of surfing that he took it upon himself to design and create his own custom surfboard brand! Lovingly christened “GUSTO Surfboards,” these boards would accompany Gus on many aquatic adventures and was just another sign of his dedication and love for things of a nautical nature.

In later years, Gus would parlay his affinity for surfing into other sports and would devote himself to coaching and mentoring his children and other young athletes in the community. At one point, the living room at the Hernandez house in South Gate was adorned with a myriad of trophies and accolades from achievements awarded to Gus for his contributions to the sporting fraternity.

Gus was a man of many talents, in addition to being a property owner, as a licensed general contractor he owned and operated a private and lucrative construction business under the name, “Modern Concept Development Inc.”

Gus was a giving man, he would put the comfort of others before his own. He was a Honest, hard working devoted father. Not only to his children but to many who viewed Gus as their second father, their mentor, their brother. He molded boys into men. I’m sure he was a pain at first, but I speak for all when I say thank you for molding us into the Men that we have become. We can’t thank you enough for preparing us for the obstacles life throws at us.

Gus Passed away in the evening of January 9th, 2023. He was 58 years young.

Gus leaves behind a large and loving family. His wife Irma, and his four children Gus C., Gabby, Brandon, and Alyssa. Along with his Grand Children Gaven, Savanna, and Camila.

They say time is the fire in which we burn, and although Gus’ star burned brightly while here with us on earth, it’s destined to burn eternally as he forever rides a heaven-sent wave in the Godly skies above.
