On August 1, 1967 Gary joined the United States Army. He was assigned to a combat unit in Vietnam. He remained stationed in Vietnam until severely wounded in 1968. He returned to the United States for treatment of a loss of his leg, shrapnel damage and other serious wounds. He remained active with the VA all his life. Assisting other wounded warriors. He later retired with an honorable discharge, decorated with several US Army Military medals, 3 Purple Hearts, honored with other distinguished medals, and commendations for his service.
After a time of getting back to work and readjustment to civilian life he began to socialize. He met a girl who would become the “love of his life,” Gloria. They were married for over 30 years.
