A hero is not boastful or selfish. A hero is a person that put others above themselves every day and never complains. Frank Eugene Florida is a hero. He was never too busy to drop off a cookie on one of his grandchildren’s cars. He would pop in their college jobs for a drink or snack just to say hello and in quiet humor wonder why they were working that day. He was always willing to carry the one with hurt feelings or the pretend broken leg. He went to countless plays, recitals, football games and concerts. If he knew a family member liked something, it would suddenly appear. Things like several boxes of Peanut Butter Crunch, a Radio Shack transistor radio kit or a Member’s only jacket. It was always about the small things that seemed inconsequential but created a lasting memory.

Frank made a large city like Long Beach feel like a small town. Every day he would make his rounds to a couple of local shops on his three-wheel bike to have tea, read a newspaper and then drop off new reading material at the nail salon. Frank was a Navy man for nearly 30 years working in the engine room. He was a thinker, a doer and avid researcher.  He put in solar power to heat the family pool before it was popular.

Frank Eugene Florida died on January 10th, 2019 and is survived by his wife Barbara of 48 years, 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. The lesson that will stick in his family’s hearts and memories is that love is not said in words but with actions. Be present. Be Kind. Be the difference.
