Frank Alonzo, 88
Frank Alonzo was born on May 10th 1929 and peacefully passed away January 3rd 2018.
Frank was born and raised in Los Angeles and lived there his entire life ultimately residing in Lakewood California. He was a proud father to four sons, Steve Alonzo, Robert Alonzo, Frank Alonzo Jr. and the youngest, Eric Alonzo.
Frank attended Willowbrook Jr. High School and earned his high school diploma from Compton College upon his return from serving in the military.
While serving in the Army during the Korean War, Frank boxed competitively winning many tournaments while representing his unit. For his service on the battlefield, he received the Combat Medical Badge, Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, 1 O/S Bar and the United Nations Service Medal.
Following his honorable discharge, Frank married his beloved wife Helen; a union that lasted 59 years until her passing in 2012. During this period in the 1950's Frank participated in semi-professional football and baseball earning the nickname “Crazy Legs” for the skill he demonstrated on the playing field.
Following his pre-war employment at E.K. Wood Lumber Company in Los Angeles California, Frank worked professionally in the Food & Beverage industry at the Los Angeles offices of the 7-Up Bottling Company for over 43 years.
Frank was also a historian, skilled craftsman and artisan specializing in design, singing and acoustic guitar. In his later years, Frank enjoyed a glass of wine in the company of family and was referred to as “Chaunchy” by the closest members of his family.
Frank is survived by his four sons (noted above), daughters-in-law, Rose Alonzo, Cecilia Alonzo, Krissy Alonzo and Sheryl Alonzo; his grandchildren Steven Alonzo, Matthew Alonzo, Grace “Dolly” Alonzo, Ashlynn Alonzo, Gabriella “Ya Ya” Alonzo, Kellan Alonzo, Aidan Alonzo and Evan Helena Kate Alonzo; his great grandchildren, Jaxson Alonzo and Ryder “Little Chaunchy” Alonzo; and his sister Alice Keegan and his godson Frank Gutierrez.
Frank is preceded in death by his wife Helen Alonzo; his parents, Demetrio Alonzo and Rita Alonzo; and his brothers and sisters Alfred “Barney” Alonzo, Demetrio “Chino” Alonzo, Felix Alonzo, Betty Gutierrez, Mercy Escobedo and Rita Gasporra.
A viewing will be held Monday January 15th 3-5 PM at Luyben Dilday Mortuary located at 5161 East Arbor Road, Long Beach CA 90808.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday January 16th at 10:15 AM at Riverside National Cemetery located at 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside CA 92518.
