Eugene Ensch, Gene, as he preferred, was born in Long Beach, California on August 12, 1929 at St. Mary's hospital to Neil and Madeline Ensch. He grew up in Long Beach with his three brothers Neil, Don, and Raymond. Gene attended St. Matthew's grammar school and graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1947. He graduated four years later from Loyola University in Los Angeles with a degree in Business. Gene enlisted in the Army in September of 1951 and proudly served in Korea during the Korean War. Upon returning to Long Beach, he met his future wife Shirley on a blind date and they were married in 1955. He raised his family in Long Beach. He loved fishing and hiking and backpacking, especially in the Sierra's, and enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and Europe. He was active at St. Joseph Church volunteering his services, donating blood to the Red Cross, and supporting Food for the Poor and countless missionaries. Gene passed away on November 13, 2015 in his home surrounded by his family. Gene's friends and family will miss his wit, his smile, and his great sense of humor. He is survived and missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley; his three children Tom Ensch, Karen Ensch, and Marianne Cornwell (Richard); and grandchildren Samantha and Jonathan Ensch, who were the light of his life. A Rosary service will be held on Friday November 20 at 6:30 pm at St. Joseph Church in Long Beach, CA. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or Food for the Poor.
