Esperanza “Pedie” Hartl of Bellflower, CA peacefully passed into eternal life on Monday March 22, 2021 surrounded by her loving family and caretaker, Maria Vero, in the comfort of her home.
Pedie was born September 27, 1938 in Silver City, NM to Baltazar Mendoza and Delfina Trujillo. She was a longtime member of the Women of the Moose, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.
Pedie was a dedicated and committed member of the Women of the Moose, the female auxiliary of the Loyal Order of the Moose, a fraternal and service organization. She joined in 1983 and held several offices throughout her 38 years as a member of various lodges, Downey being the most recent. One of Pedie’s proudest achievements was earning high honors and degrees. She became a Senior Regent in 1987 and was later accepted into the College of Regents in 2004, one of the highest honors bestowed upon members.
Pedie’s happiest times were socializing at Women of the Moose, attending meetings, gatherings, events, BINGO, trips, supporting other members as they received their achievement awards, and attending conventions throughout the country.
Pedie cared deeply for her family and friends. She was generous with her time and treasure. She was always ready to knit a blanket for a new baby or a college student. She was an amazing cook. Whatever ingredients she had in the pantry became a delicious meal. Her banana bread was a much sought-after gift. She was the matriarch of the family—always ready to help raise nephews and nieces and be a loving Godmother to several children. She blessed many lives and has left us with beautiful memories that will be cherished forever.
Pedie is survived by her daughter Catherine Diaz (Jack), Patricia Gutierrez (Enrique); 6 grandchildren, Lori (Mark), Alex (Shawntay), Anthony (Geina), Antoinette, Jessica and Darren; 10 great grandchildren, Kyle, Bree, Nina, Adrian, Aliana, Cole, Kaliano, Zachary, Andrew, and Ava; 3 siblings George Ponylite, Theresa Torres, Guadalupe Duarte (David); and many nephews and nieces who were very dear to her especially Lucille, Sue, and Tommy.
Pedie was predeceased by her daughter Diane Castillo, her first husband John Castillo, her second husband Tom Hartl, grandson James Gutierrez, her parents Baltazar Mendoza and Delfina Flores, and most recently her sister Priscilla Blea.
Friends and family will be received on Thursday April 22 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Luyben Dilday Mortuary, 5161 E. Arbor Road, Long Beach CA. On Friday April 23, the recital of the Rosary will be at 9:30 am followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 9647 Beach St., Bellflower, CA.
