A CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Ellen Elizabeth Hostetter Farquhar
I shall not pass this way but once, therefore any good that I can do or kindness that I can show, let me do it now, for I shall not pass this way again.
Ellen was born in Whittier, California on January 21, 1920, into a strong Christian family. From a young age she looked to her faith to guide her path. As the eldest daughter of 7 children, she set high educational standards for herself. She put herself through college where she earned degrees from Fullerton, USC, and CSU Long Beach where she received her Masters. Ellen went on to earn educational credentials in Library Science, Secondary, and Administration. Her career extended throughout Los Angeles and Orange Country High Schools to the Orange County Dept. of Education, where she worked as the Coordinator for all K-12 School Libraries. Her dedication and excellence in this life’s work lead her to be recognized in the 2000 publication of, Who’s Who of American Women.
She met Richard Farquhar in San Diego on a blind date. They fell in love and married in 1946. While finishing at USC and beginning her career, she helped Richard through Chiropractic College and to set up his practice in Bellflower. It was here they built a home and raised their three children, twin girls, Mary and Jeanne and son Richard. Ellen shared her love of learning with her children by imparting the importance of family, education, the building of a strong faith, the exposure to the Arts, other religions, and cultures.
Upon retirement, Richard and Ellen moved to La Mirada then Carlsbad and traveled the world. Never forgetting their roots, they stayed closely connected with family, friends, and colleagues. She never missed any of the 98 annual family reunion picnics! Ellen loved reading (“Oh, the places stories can take you”), collecting dolls (reminded her of the children in her classrooms), and “collecting smiles.” Ellen brought her grandchildren together for monthly “Grandma’s Breakfasts”, she was very active in her Bible studies, Red Hats, and hosted many High Teas. After Richard’s death, she returned to La Mirada to be closer to her family. At the young age of 96, she moved to Artesia Christian Home where she stayed active with the assistance of her family and devoted caregivers. She was surrounded by loved ones when she entered her eternal home May 22, 2019 at the age of 99. Ellen will always hold a huge piece of our hearts as we remember her loving smile, those knowing eyes, and kind and generous spirit.
