Edwene Dorothy (Smyer) Watson, 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Long Beach, California surrounded by family on Friday, September 1, 2021. She was born on August 17, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of the late Roy H. Smyer Sr., and Eulalie (Boudreau) Smyer. Edwene grew in New Orleans and graduated from St. Joseph Clark High School in 1953. She graduated from Xavier University in 1957 with a BA Degree in Art Education and a minor in Social Studies. After attending UCLA Extension, LA State and Pepperdine University, Edwene received a Master’s Degree in Art Education.

Edwene met the love of her life, Bob Watson, on one of her many visits to Pascagoula, Mississippi during summer vacation, where she taught dance lessons to the local kids. They were married on June 24, 1961, in New Orleans.

Prior to relocating to California, Edwene taught at Priestly Jr. High, in New Orleans, and Attucks High School in Hollywood, Florida. After moving to Los Angeles, Edwene taught at Holy Spirit and later at Cecil B. DeMille Middle School until she retired in 1992.

Edwene was the recipient of many awards and certificate in her lifetime; one of which was the Bread and Cup which she received on November 15, 1987, when she became a Eucharistic Minister. She had a passion for the arts. She enjoyed dancing, attending plays and the opera. Also, she enjoyed sitting quietly, painting and listening to music. One of her favorite jazz artist was Kenny G.

Edwene leaves memories to be cherished by two sons and their families; Robert Jr. (Roberta) and Steven (Judy), seven grandchildren: Joslyn, Robert III, Netori, Summer, Mark and Kylie, one great grandchild, Rose; sister, Geraldine Sissac; sisters in law, Velma (Edward) Long and Edna (Freddie) Perryman, and a host of loving and devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Edwene was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sr; mother and father, Eulalie and Roy Smyer Sr; brothers, Edward and Roy Jr. (Teresa); sister, Audrey (Alvin) Bacquet and granddaughter, Tori Edwene.

More than anything, Edwene was a remarkable wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. To Edwene, family was everything. This was evident by the family gatherings each Sunday and every holiday for dinner and playing games. She was multi-talented with a quick wit and a smile that would light up any room. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
