Edward Chaides, 89 years old, passed away peacefully in his home among family, Saturday, August 20, 2016. Born in Paso Robles on May 25, 1927, he was the oldest child of Ben and Erlinda, and had 15 younger brothers and sisters, Carmen (deceased), Dolores (deceased), Gloria, Caroline, Evelyn, Larry, Little Caroline, Maria Luisa, Manuel (deceased), Sylvia, Benita, Josefa, Socorro, Fernando (deceased) and Sebastian in U.S. and Mexico. His family lived in Oxnard until their house burnt down and then they lived in Redondo Beach.

In 1944, at 17 years old, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and on July 1, 1946, he was at the Bikini Atoll, a joint U.S. Army-Navy task force staged 2 atomic weapons tests, located in the Marshall Islands.

He was married to his first wife, Juanita for 13 years and had 2 sons with, Edward L. and Leonard. His step-father, Lorenzo Salinas, who raised him and he loved very much, passed away with cancer in 1957 at the age of 53.

He married his second wife, Michal Ann Holtom on June 16, 1961, purchased a house in Los Alamitos that same year and years later, adopted their daughters, Karin and Kelly. Ed and Michal shared 52 years of blissful wedded life together before she passed away on November 10, 2012.

He was definitely proud to be the grandfather of 7 grandchildren, Joaquin, Kyle, Victoria, Desiree, Brandi, Caroline and Chaise, and 3 great granddaughters, Susie, Abigail and Olivia.

Edward retired from Shell Oil Company in Wilmington as a senior draftsman in 1986. After retiring, he attended Cerritos college, taking Chinese cooking, stained glass window and woodworking classes.

His favorite hobby was raising koi fish in his backyard pond which he constructed with a large waterfall. He was an avid Dodger fan and attended the game when Sandy Koufax pitched a No Hitter against the Giants in 1963.

A longtime member of St Hedwig's Catholic Church in Los Alamitos, he volunteered an abundance of his time being an Eucharistic Minister to the sick, in addition to being strongly involved with Kairos Outside Prison Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul and Cursillo, where he generously gave of much of his time, leadership and woodworking talents to help out wherever needed.

He enjoyed traveling abroad, particularly to the reunions for the USS Skagit and USS Appalachian. He was a member of the American Legion Post 716 for many years and attended many fundraising events, his favorites being the monthly Sons Steak Dinner, as well as the Post Brunch which included menudo and an omelet bar.
