Dolores Arlene Clarity Mohr, passed away on Dec. 6 in her home with family at her side. Dolores was born on May 28, 1928, to Violet Ruth Anne Woodington Clarity and Michael William Clarity in Minneapolis, MN. As a child she had a flare for the dramatic and participated in dance, singing, and theater, which she continued to do throughout her life. She graduated from Academy of Holy Angels in MN and got her AA degree from Stephens College in Missouri. In 1949, she moved to Hollywood with her sister Pat. Shortly later, they were joined by her mother and sisters (her father had passed away when she was 12). In Hollywood, she worked in the broadcasting industry and was one of 5 finalists in KTTV’s Search for Girls competition on the Ada Leonard (famous female band conductor’s) talent show.
In 1952, she met Lawrence Vincent Mohr at a Valentine’s Day dance at church of the Good Shepherd. Larry, a Marine who fought in Saipan and Tinian in WWII, was smitten the moment he saw Dolores from across the dance floor. They married on June 21, 1952, and Cathy was born a year and one week later. Patty and Tina were also born in Santa Monica and then they moved to Rochester MN for a year, where Lawrence was born. From there they moved to San Diego, CA, where Matt was born and then to Santa Clara where Ruth, Margaret, and Anthony were born. Dolores was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker.
Once all her children were in school, Dolores began to work out of the home as a preschool director in Newbury Park, and then later she taught reading at La Reina High School and was a Wedding Coordinator at St. Paschal Baylon, both in Thousand Oaks. Even while working out of the home, Dolores still found time to serve home-cooked meals, attend her children’s extracurricular events, help them with homework, and instill in them a vibrant and prayerful faith. Soon Dolores was greeting grandchildren and providing them with the same nurturing love as she had their own 8.
After retirement, Dolores and Larry moved to Big Bear Lake. Both, while still involved in their children and grandchildren’s lives, volunteered for church and community programs. But on October 23, 2000, Dolores lost her Larry to cancer after 48 years of marriage. Following that, Dolores moved to the Long Beach area to be around most of her growing extended family. She attended St. Cornelius Catholic Church and belonged to People for Others and the Young Ladies Institute.
Even though slowed down by Macular Degeneration and mobility problems, Dolores, continued to be involved in her family’s lives, attending as many activities as possible. In her last few years, she remarked that she couldn’t do much these days except pray for her family which she did fervently and often. With so many to pray for, that became her fulltime job!
Dolores will be remembered for her nurturing love, caring spirit, sense of humor, and devout faith.
