Courtney “Corey” Ian Hammond was born on March 19, 1968, in Long Beach, California to Marshall and Camilla Hammond. He passed away on January 14, 2025, in Lakewood, California.
Corey grew up in Long Beach with his parents and brothers Ric and Brenden. He had many childhood memories of running the street on big-wheels and bikes, digging in the dirt with Tonka trucks with his brothers, neighborhood kids, and childhood friend Donnie Williams. Winters were spent at the family cabin in Big Bear skiing with his father and brothers. Springs were spent playing Little League Baseball. In high school, Corey was All-City in football playing Offensive Guard his senior season and graduating in 1986. His father taught him how to sail Hobie Cats and crewed for him in various regattas in California and Mexico. With this experience, he purchased his own boat and also learned to windsurf. He was photographed by a local paper windsurfing in Alamitos Bay with his dog Gidget.
In and after high school, he worked at Regatta Sailboats. While attending college he worked and managed a Kragen Auto Parts store. He decided on a career change and joined the California Highway Patrol. He and his former wife Vicki lived in San Jose during his rookie year before being stationed in Torrance and purchasing a house in Lakewood.
Corey had a variety of interests and activities that he enjoyed with friends. Skiing, line dancing, NASCAR, Pirates of the Caribbean, the 3 Stooges, Big Bear Lake, Lake Havasu, candy, movies, karaoke, mountain biking, the film A Nightmare Before Christmas, TV show MASH, rum, Brooks and Dunn, music by The Police and Oingo Boingo, his truck that he named Raquel, and Los Angeles Rams football.
Corey is survived by his father Marshall, brothers Ric and Brenden, nephews Kyle and Oliver, niece Piper, and Goddaughter Avery van der Veen.
