Clancy Olaf Lee Profile Photo
C. Olaf Lee of Long Beach, California, passed away June 10, 2017. Olaf was born in New Orleans, LA, July 12, 1938. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve after high school and attended LSU after basic training. He then worked for Freeport Sulphur on an off shore mining rig for a short time before moving to Los Angeles in 1961, finding work at General Telephone. Olaf married Nancy Newton Lee, his wife of 51 years, in 1963, and moved to Long Beach. He received his BA and MA at CSULB and went on to have a 30-year career with the Norwalk-La Mirada School District teaching photography at Neff and La Mirada high schools. He contributed greatly to the La Mirada Matadores football program by filming most Friday games through the 1980's and '90's for team review.
In addition to being a loving husband, father, and friend, Olaf greatly loved motorcycles and motorcycle racing. His passion for motorcycles and racing led him to a more than 20 year simultaneous career working part-time as a salesman at LeBard & Underwood Honda in La Habra. Olaf raced motorcycles for many years, first in Louisiana, and then in California where he raced at Ascot Park in the early years and later in AMA D37 hare and hound, scramble, enduro, and dual sport events. He also worked as a volunteer for the Team Honda racing team for many years, providing pit support at the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 off-road racing events. Olaf continued to ride and race in to his 70s.
Olaf is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Newton Lee (d. 2014). He is survived by his children; Lara Kurutz (Scott Paccie), Karin Lee (Bobby Knight), Christian Lee (Tina Thomson Lee), and P.T. Castrejon (Jennie Nash), along with 11 grandchildren including Sophie Cummings, Claire Castrejon, Chloe Lim, Eve Kurutz, Sam Kurutz, Zach Castrejon, Casey Knight, Jesse Knight, Cornelius Lee, Nancy Knight, and Penelope Lee. Olaf is also survived by the many now-adult surrogate "kids" in his life, who he very much adored and always welcomed to the party.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 7, 2017 in Long Beach. Please contact thelatenights@gmail.com for more information. In lieu of flowers, please donate to www.alz.org .
