Calvin Ward Macy “Butch”

December 6, 1952 – July 8, 2018

Macy was born in Joliet, Illinois to Calvin W. and Stella Macy. He lived in a different house every year for six years until the family settled in Long Beach in 1956. He graduated from Millikan High School and Long Beach State College.

Macy worked for AMC as the factory representative for the SW and Hawaii region. He then worked for Long Beach City College. His work in the vocational training programs was legendary, including the innovative use of alternative fuels for the automotive industry. The training programs he developed educated a generation of “MacGyver’s,” tradesmen who had problem-solving skills.

He was the epic outdoorsman and enjoyed cruising on his powerboat, “Final Exam,” diving in exotic locations and sailing locally. A special tribute to him was made at last week’s Wet Wednesday burger bash. He also loved cruising on his Gold Wing motorcycle, often for charity, and scuba diving.

He suffered a medical emergency while on a 12-day cruise along Russia’s Volga River with his wife and two other couples. All six were friends since college. He was 65 years old.

In addition to his wife Carolyn of 40 years, Macy is survived by his sons: Chris (Amanda), Carey (April), granddaughters Harper, Beckett and Austen, and 2 sisters. Macy served his community as a cub master, and assistant scoutmaster.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Friday, July 20 at 7 pm at the U.S. Sailing Center on Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach.
