Barbara Jean Seals

1933 – 2026

Barbara Jean Seals of Lakewood, California passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 6, 2026 at the age of 92.

Barbara was born in Grand Island, Nebraska and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating high school, inspired by her deep love of French culture, she traveled to France where she immersed herself in the language and culture that would shape her life’s work. She later earned her master’s degree in French and began her teaching career in the 1960s at Jordan High School in Long Beach, California.

In 1955, Barbara moved with her family to Long Beach, California. There she met her husband, Harlan, and together they built a loving home and raised three children: William, Kathleen, and Janet.

While teaching, Barbara continued her education at Long Beach State University, earning a double master’s degree in French. She dedicated 30 years to teaching, sharing her passion for language, literature, and culture with generations of students before retiring.

Barbara’s greatest joy in life was her family. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and treasured every moment spent with them. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, Frankie and Audrey.

She is survived by her son William; her daughters Kathleen and Janet (Dave); her grandchildren Chelsea, Savannah, Spencer, Justin, Hunter, and Gabriella; and her great-grandchildren Harlan, Veronica, Harlow, Rowen, and Dexter.

Barbara will be remembered for her love of learning, her devotion to family, and the countless lives she touched through her teaching and kindness.
