Barbara Ann Schorr

Barbara Ann Schorr ~ born Barbara Ann Maze was born to Norman and Barbara Maze on July 31, 1931, along with her twin sister Elizabeth. Two weeks later her mother passed away in the hospital. Barbara and Elizabeth were raised by their paternal grandmother in Fresno, Ca. In 8th grade, Barbara’s sister, Elizabeth, passed away from Rheumatic Fever, and the Maze family moved to Bakersfield, Ca where Barbara attended Garces High School and met the love of her life Jim Schorr.

In 1952, Barbara and Jim were married and lived in Bakersfield along with her grandmother. Taking care of grandma was very important to Barbara, even when she had grandma moved into a care facility. Barbara went and visited her before and after work daily. While in Bakersfield, the first four Schorr children were born. Then, Jim’s job took them to Long Beach, CA, where they found Our Lady of Refuge Parish, and the neighborhood that they would call home. Two more Schorr children were born in Long Beach, before Jim was transferred back to Bakersfield, where one more daughter was born. In 1963, they moved back to Long Beach and their forever home on Rogene street; where the last two of the Schorr nine children were born.

While Barbara had her hands full with raising nine children, she found time to sew, making matching outfits so as not to lose us, giving us the opportunity to go “shopping” for material for Tee shirts or outfits, she made Toni’s wedding dress and the bridesmaid dresses, and the granddaughters got the most beautiful dresses every Christmas. She and Shirley McCabe made homemade strawberry jam every spring to last throughout the year. Every holiday she would put something special on our breakfast dishes to represent that holiday. Taking care of people was important to Barbara, she worked for 40 years with Meal on Wheels, prayed with her church YLI group (Young Ladies Institute), was a member of Our Lady of Refuge Parish, and a member of Old Ranch Golf Course. But her proudest, most important accomplishments, were her children!

Barbara and Jim enjoyed many golf trips and cruises with friends from ORCC, OLR, Bakersfield and family. For their 25th anniversary their children bought them tickets to the Notre Dame vs USC football game in South Bend. This started a love affair with traveling to ND to watch this game and each of the children were given the opportunity to travel with them to enjoy this game.

She had many Nana-ism’s, such as: “It’s all take-a-backable” ”Hi Angel” “SUPER” “that’s a YUMMY color” or her famous “WHOOT-HOOT” whenever Notre Dame scored.

Barbara was a loving wife, friend, caring Aunt, a very attentive and giving mother, cherished by her Grandchildren, and a blessing to her Great Grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years Jim, her parents and two siblings: Elizabeth and Norman.

She is survived by her Nine children: Toni Nuñez (Julio), Jim Schorr (Tammy), Marc Schorr (Lisa), Beth MacDonald (Steve), Debbie Vomero (John), Pat Schorr (Mary), Linda Coryell (Bob), Barbie MacRae (Bruce) Terri McMaster (Steve).

Her Twenty Seven Grandchildren: Cameron, Esau, Joaquin, Katie (Scott), Tommy (Amy), Alec (Melissa), Ric (Kitzia)...Trisha (Brian), Danielle, Alexandra (John)...Nick (Ashton), Kyle (Natalie), Jacqueline (Devon) …Jessica, Barbie… Sarah (Josh), Nick…Michelle (Jordan), Philip (Joelle), Kelly (Fabien), James (Diandra)... Cindy (Ziggy), Joel… Jaymee (Josh), Joshua (Eve), Timarie, Meghan, Nick (Ashley) Jake (Taraneh)...Michael (Maeve), Mikaila (Matthew)
